BratVegas.sk - Your Guide to Living in Bratislava

Directory :: Travelling in Slovakia

To experience the real Slovakia, you need to get out of the city once in a while. Fortunately, the buses and trains will get you where you want to go cheaply and reliably, if not especially quickly.

If travelling by train, booking advanced tickets is always advisable but a must if you travel on a Friday, when they’ll be full of students and office workers returning home for the weekend. Our BratVegas top tip – if you cant find a seat in a carriage, there’s a good chance there’ll be one free in the buffet car so just buy a coffee and make it last a couple of hours.

Coaches are even cheaper but slower. If departing from the main bus station (Mlynské Nivy), check the departure times as they don’t always match the timetables on the boards. As with the trains, it’s worth booking your ticket in advance.

The best sites for timetables and information in English are www.vlaky.sk for trains (including international ones) and www.slovaklines.sk for buses.
